Fix a Shadow
Edition realized during the first Superior Screen-printing Course.
For this edition of the course it has been decided to have the participants realize a graphic design on 30x30cm format 300gm white paper, with a maximum image format of 25x25cm, and with a 3 stage print, to be contained in the portfolio entitled “Fix a Shadow”.
Artists participating in the the first Superior Screen-printing Course are: Antonella Campisi, Mario Ciaramitaro, Tommaso Gorla e Daniele Zoico.
For the first edition of the course, the artists had to reflect on the concept of shadow. A shadow is a dark area projected onto a surface from a mass that stands between a light source and that same surface. A shadow is an absence of light, it’s mass impeding the passage of light and creating a dark area. The concept of shadow remains an open direction, permeated by different sensory levels. The working stages of the screen print are therefore taken as a paradigm for the definition of shadow. In photo-mechanics, use of negatives and film is the moment closest to the photograph, where you work for empty and full tones, whites and blacks, light levels and shadows. In this process, a design is transformed into a screen, the screen artwork into a screen stencil, transferring the original image into a print surface through photosensitive gelatin and UV light. After this phase, the original image is fixed by contact to the screen mesh in negative, with the whites and blacks inverted, and it is exactly through the parts that remains white where the ink will pass for the print. The squeegee, that is a spatula device, used to push the ink through the open areas of the screen stencil is then used to pass the color. The colour disappears under the screen and is imprinted onto the print surface fixed beneath the frame.
