Daily exposure to the unpredictable force of the sea has always made coastal populations deeply superstitious.
In this tenacious struggle against a nature as generous as it is untamable, the fisherman, having exhausted the means suggested by daily experience, relies on a rich encyclopaedia of symbols, legends, averts and proverbs, handed down from time immemorial.
Each element of nature, charged with dual meanings, participates in the allegorical interpretation of the whole. Seagulls and poisonous fish are believed to be the souls of the shipwrecked, wandering without peace and deprived of celestial enjoyment. Waves and sea trumpets are personified by infernal monsters that roil the waters and drag the unfortunate sailors into the abyss. In the harbour, the sorceress, in the manner of an ancient pagan priestess, jealously guards the secret formulas of signs and averts, while the moon, undisturbed, has always influenced the flow of the tides.
This print depicts some symbolic elements of popular maritime culture, mainly from the Upper Adriatic area.
